    So, have train builders started using those hinged track pieces to make more realistic curves? Or do those just end up taking up way too much space?

    Not that I have seen. The curves (more like angled straight track) that Indylug or whatever they call themselves now probably take up more space: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=4529572
